Cantonese or Mandarin: which should my child learn?

Start with the people your child wants to speak with and the situations where they will use the language. Choose Cantonese for Cantonese-speaking family conversations, or Mandarin for Mandarin-speaking relatives and relevant school goals.

Start with a real conversation goal

List who your child will speak with: grandparents, cousins, friends, or classmates. Ask which language those people use comfortably. A goal such as greeting a grandparent and asking about their day gives you a concrete reason to choose a stream.

Compare the learning pathways

KABE’s Cantonese stream focuses on everyday family speech, pronunciation, and cultural expressions, generally using Traditional characters and Jyutping. The Mandarin stream combines conversation with Pinyin and character recognition, with Simplified or Traditional characters according to family goals.

Separate speaking goals from writing goals

Tell your tutor whether conversation, reading, writing, or school support matters most. A family conversation goal does not require every lesson to focus on character writing. Ask how the proposed activities will support your priorities.

If your family uses both languages

KABE offers separate streams and can discuss splitting lessons between them. Before choosing both, consider your child’s available time and interest. Ask the coordinator how scheduling and practice would work rather than assuming a combined lesson.

Questions to bring to your enquiry

Which language does my child already understand? Who can practice with them? Which character system matters to our family? What would a useful first conversation look like? Share these answers with the team so they can recommend a starting point.
